God’s Care Through An Autumn Palette

Monday evening, as I puttered around my apartment, my phone chimed. It was a message from my sweet friend Nikki telling me she had left a little something outside my front door. First of all, I was so happy to hear from her. It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other, so receiving that text was such a sweet surprise. I had actually been thinking about her that very morning. God’s timing is impeccable.

Earlier that day, as we sang a couple of worship songs during our Monday morning chapel service (I work at a private Christian high school), I couldn't stop the tears from flowing through the entire song, "The Lord Will Provide" by Passion. I found myself barely able to sing at times as I quietly wrestled within and felt the weight of the sadness of my reality and the promise of who God is.

Perhaps you can relate to that feeling of quietly carrying a burden or feeling discouraged? Whether it's navigating financial strain, walking through a difficult season in a relationship, or facing hardships at work, life can feel genuinely hard. The economic reality right now is brutal not just in Canada, but around the world. Many people are feeling the weight of trying to make ends meet as groceries, gas prices and other everyday essentials keep skyrocketing in cost.

Lately, I’ve found myself wrestling with what God’s provision actually looks like on a daily basis when the budget is tight. And during chapel, the lines from that song that completely undid me were:

"If I have You, I have enough

Your love will satisfy"

-"The Lord Will Provide" by Passion

Because I believe these words to be true, but my heart felt sad.

When I opened my door on Monday night, I was greeted by a mason jar filled with the most vibrant, warm autumn tones—coral, deep maroon, rich burgundy, berry pink, cream, and soft white.

The harvest autumn palette, with the velvety, tightly layered petals of the dahlias paired with soft, feathery celosia plumes, matched exactly what I was feeling inside. They were homegrown with so much care, cut fresh from my friend's sweet backyard flower farm. (If you'd like to see more of her beautiful local blooms, you can visit her Instagram page, @janbloem.flowerfarm).

In that quiet moment on my doorstep, God reminded me that He sees, He cares, and He is right here with me. He used a thoughtful friend’s kindness to speak softly and tenderly to my heart, giving me a full circle moment. God made the words we sang in chapel come alive with literal flowers put outside my door.

Look at the flowers, in all of their beauty

I don't have to wonder, You know what You're doing

So why would I worry at all, when You're faithful to supply?

-"The Lord Will Provide" by Passion

My circumstances didn't magically transform overnight, but He highlighted a gentle truth: His love is enough, even on the days when it feels hard to see.
