7 Questions With My BFF Natalie

Updated: Feb 26, 2022

When I came up with the idea for this section in my lifestyle blog, I knew right away that I wanted to interview my BFF, youngest biological sister and sister in Christ. To say that she’s my favourite person to have a conversation with is an understatement. Every chat between the two of us is full of laughter and depth (we can’t help ourselves...haha). Whether we’re talking about the goodness of God, relationships or dreams, this girl speaks incredible wisdom into my life that goes beyond her years. I’m happy and proud to share her a bit with you today. Please welcome the insightful and beautiful human that is Natalie.

What inspires you these days?

The Bible never ceases to be my first and main source of inspiration. I am also inspired and challenged (because I think the two often go together) by the books I’m reading, my family and close friends, Bible teachers, my surroundings, nature, current affairs and art.

Can you describe a moment or experience that God used powerfully in your life?

The summer after graduating from middle school one of my best friends died unexpectedly. The shock and sudden loss of my dear friend devastated me and as a young teen I didn’t know how to navigate through something so unfamiliar. Up until that point in my life, I had never experienced anything so tragic and heartbreaking. For the first time in my whole life, I was awakened to how much I needed God’s grace and love. I couldn’t get through the day without turning to God and praying. God became my strength and sustenance in that season of mourning. Although later I veered and unfortunately years passed before I truly set my heart and mind on Jesus, God’s unfailing love and grace during such a difficult season of my youth impacted me powerfully and is a testament of God’s faithfulness in my life.

You went to Austria for Bible school in 2013. What was the biggest lesson God imparted to you at Bible School?

While studying the Bible in Austria, one of the greatest truths that God reinforced to me was that as a child of God, He is always with me. God showed me this truth through the glorious mountains that surrounded the Bible school. The Austrian Alps were indisputably around me but there were days it was so foggy that I couldn’t see the mountains. Although I knew with certainty that there were mountains behind me, on those foggy days it appeared as though they didn’t exist. God so lovingly whispered to me, I am like those mountains, strong and majestic. I am always standing sturdy and present in your life. When you are seeking after me and open hearted (the clear days) you undeniably feel my presence but when you are impaired by busyness, distractions and sin (the foggy days) you do not feel my presence even though I am with you always. You can doubt or deny my presence but that doesn’t change the truth that I am here with you. For me it was and still is today a magnificent visual of God’s love, faithfulness and presence.

What songs do you have on repeat?

Not one to be current, I have “Do It Again” by Elevation Worship, “Your Love Awakens Me” by Phil Wickham, and “Favela” by Ina Wroldsen and Alok on repeat.

What do you like to do for fun?

My idea of a good time is…

  • taking a day trip (or a proper getaway) to some unfamiliar or even familiar place

  • walking or picnicking in the park

  • boating or swimming on a hot summer day

  • sharing a homemade meal with family and friends

  • discovering restaurants that serve fresh authentic Mexican food

  • reading a great book in a cozy spot

  • listening to upbeat music

  • watching a film that makes me laugh

What has been your favourite country to visit and why?

God has blessed me with some amazing travel opportunities throughout my life. It is almost impossible for me to pick a favourite place but the country that has left the greatest impression on me because of its unique and stunning geographical features is Iceland. I always describe my visit to Iceland as the closest I will ever be to visiting another planet. The volcanoes, the geysers, the waterfalls, and lava fields create an extraordinary landscape that will leave you in awe. The blue lagoon will only add to the wonder of it all. It is a geothermal treat and an absolute must when visiting this Nordic island. Iceland is simply incredible and the beauty of its natural features echo the majesty of our Creator God.

What books have impacted you and why?

God has used the Bible and many other books to renew my mind and challenge me to live with greater purpose and vision. Some books that I would highly recommend are Chasing Vines by Beth Moore, Say Yes to God by Kay Warren, Spirit Hunger by Gari Meacham and The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn.
